Vales emerald potatoes
« on: July 18, 2008, 16:41:39 »
I know quite a few people got them, how did they go? Do they taste good? Did they flower?

Mine are still in the ground I was late planting them and I was waiting for them all to flower but only one plant has perhaps these ones don't normally flower?

I grew mine in a bag. Judging by the number of small ones I probably harvested too early. Only tried them boiled and we thought they were a good flavour and texture.

only noticed two of mine in flower.  Dug up one plant, smallish potatoes, but quite tasty.

no flower, only 2 or 3 salad type potatoes in the buckets. But only opened a few so far.

Dug first lot today, still in flower, basic spud, not a wow taste, but nice, I grew them because I got a few bags given but I prefery Charlottes so I wouldn't choose them next year. unless they show themselves to be good keepers etc as the season goes on.

Comparison picks of yields on my Blog http://vortexs-veg-patch.blogspot.com/.
Whilst there yield is comparable to other earlies they don't boil well - they split , and their taste is nothing special. The Mayan Gold however were much better, even if I did pull them a couple of weeks early.

i finally sampled mine. Strange colour when cooked sort of greenish yellow (don't worry they weren't green to start with) wondered if that was the reason for the name. Quite a good yield but rather uneven shaped potatoes and not an exciting flavour. Like Jeannine I prefer Charlotte or it's other parent Maris peer.

Had good yield, planted in buckets. Tended to break down when boiled so used them mainly for mash, no real taste, however , as they were freebies why worry! Would no grow them  unless they were once again given away :D

We did a taste test last week, comparing them to Orla. They're marginally sweeter, but with Orla apparently being "blight resistant" , the VE weren't so much better that you'd choose them.
