What can I use these for?
« on: August 14, 2005, 16:37:23 »
We have managed to get 16 of these things, once used for snail farming. I was thinking they may have a use for growing things in or as a propagator. Any other ideas? There are 10 compartments joined to make a row, there is an irrigation bar running the length of the compartments with little microjets for each compartment, connect the hosepipe and it will water whatever is inside. The top part as you can see in the photo has an opening for each compartment. The size is 36cm diameter, and 2.4m long. There is drainage out the bottom of each compartment in the form of a slot.

It could be multi functional, eg for growing lettuces etc under cover with the irrigiation made easier by the watering gizmo or could it be used as a cloche?  I'm sure someone on here will come up with a bright idea  :)

cloches for early lettuces immediately spring to mind, I am sure other uses will become apparent quite readily . . .

They look very 'usable'

I though about lettuces first as well, but that would give me an awful lot of lettuces ;D, 160 to be exact :o

Well, not all for lettuces then  ;D  You could vary it a bit with mixed chinese leaves too  :)

Thanks Derek and Wardy, I'll probably use them for growing some early lettuces, herbs and small carrots. I'm also going to see if they will work for producing some early strawberries. The irrigation hose inside the ones I don't use for salads and strawbs will probably be put to use under my potatoes next year. And I might build a cold frame or melon house and use these (cut down) to make the lid. Thanks for the suggestions :D
