Dividing Cannas
« on: February 28, 2006, 19:16:51 »
can anyone tell me when the best time to do this is? I have 2 large plants overwintering in the greenhouse in buckets and would like to make more plants out of them and make more space in the greenhouse at the same time. what sort of treatment/compost will the divisions need?

Also the plants have very large rootballs (hence the buckets), can i reduce these at the same time as dividing? IE cut away part of the rootball do that they wil fit in a smaller pot?

Any help apreciated

Thanks.

Richard Hi!  I am very ruthless with mine, when they start to produce new green bits I hack em about, dividing etc. I cut back the rootballs, and then pot them into regular potting compost, they don't seem to hate me for it! Though I am sure someone will come along with different advice!

Thanks for putting this message on Richard, I was going to do the same.  My cannas are in a very large pot but they are bursting out the side so have to be divided.  Thanks Doris for the info :)
Happy gardening all...........Pat
