hi, was given cherry tree today which i had to dig up .Ive put into large container should i prune it now or leave for a while.?

Don't prune it now, if you want to prune it, do it in late summer. This applies to all stone fruits, like plums, peaches, cherries etc. They are more vulnerable to fungal disease in winter.
