Mutant Orchids
« on: May 16, 2006, 17:32:14 »
When my two phalaenopsis' flowers finished, I trimmed the stem back to the node. One plant duly produced more flowers. However, the second produced a shoot in mid air. It has three small leaves, each an inch or so long, but no roots. Do I wait for some aerial roots to develop, or do I take it off and root it as is? Any ideas appreciated....

Lucky you! What you have is a keiki (Hawaiian for baby).  Wait for it  to develop roots, then remove it off and pot it up in fine bark.

Thanks, Deeds - will do. And they're not supposed to like south-facing windows over a radiator.....

I have about 5-6 keiki on one of my dendrobiums. All have roots I think. I've removed and potted one so far, thought I'd make sure I got the method right first before removing them all.

Good luck with yours.

Thanks - am still waiting for the roots! Good luck with yours, too.
