Don't remember '63 was only 18mths at the time... but we lived on a farm at about 800' and some roads were cut off for five weels...

Froglets, I am having my windows done this week, hence all this horrid wind and rain at the moment, you can blame me! :(

I remember the snow of '63 too, I was only little, only managed to walk to the end of the road and came home again, it was so deep - never seen snow like it since!  It would be lovely for my children to experience it sometime!

Just realised that it will probably be really warm & sunny the weekend afterwards as I will be stuck indoors wallpapering & painting.


I was born late on in '63 & mum said she couldn't get me out in the pram until April - We used to regularly get cut off in the Scottish Borders, hence my store cupboard still even through the supermarkets are pretty much 24hr.

You youngsters have some odd memories of the winter of '63 :D. It didn't start late, the snow in the midlands began in the evening towards the end of December 1962 and it snowed continuously  (and very heavily) for over twenty four hours. The temperature dropped and the same snow was still lying in places at the end of March. Roads were blocked and where the snow had drifted some of the lanes on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border were filled to a depth of about eight to ten feet :o
Working outside was not funny for the whole of the three months but people who had worked ouside during the winter of 1947 claimed that of 1963 was not as cold.

I was coming up to eight at the time (my birthday's round about now) : I think that's the year it snowed on Christmas Day and later on didn't the sea at Whitstable partially freeze?

We certainly were able to toboggan for a lot of the winter months.

The only other thing I remember is that 1963 is a very good year for vintage port!

am i the only one who's quite glad about global warming, only because of the warmer weather, obviously, I don't like what it's doing to the planet but it's better for me and my joints, and all the people who have mobility problems,  :) :)

Larkspur is right the cold weather started on Boxing Day 1962 and it never got above freezing point until some time in March.

Must have been boxing day back in the early sixties, I was home on leave from the navy and I had a telegram telling me not to attempt to get back to my ship unless I could be sure I could make it. Went back in march, thats when the last of the snowman on the front lawn melted. ;D  Me and a few others had the same idea, so we did not get put on a charge. Got flown down to Gibralta to rejoin the ship. Which then set sail for an Artic patrol. Now that was cold :(
