A few years ago I use to visit a nursery in Somerset which sold bags of peat which I bought and used to mulch my shrubs. Now I believe this is unacceptable. The soil is now looking tired. I compost all my waste but it does not seem enough. What is the next best thing to peat? Thanks for any advice.

Leafmould is better, or manure is better still. Peat isn't a particularly good additive, quite apart from other issues. It adds organic matter, but no nutrients.
