Lettuce regrowing
« on: June 22, 2007, 15:37:03 »
A week or so back, I cut a Little Gem type lettuce, and left the root in the compost (I normally pull the whole thing). I noticed today that the cut surface now has 4 tiny shoots coming up. Is this normal, and will the shoots mature into further lettuces?

They are growing in MPC, in a polystyrene box on the racking outside the conservatory door.

Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

Brilliant, I shall definitely CUT in future.

One more question.....does the same apply to all lettuce types? I'm thinking of the loose leaf types....salad bowl and Lollo Rossa specifically.
Grow your own and enjoy the fruits of your labours,
Regards Alan.

Some like salad bowl are bred to cut, or tear, and come again... the crisp heads like Iceberg types are the worst although you can get several small heads forming at the leaf joints these tend to bolt...
