Pruning a Fig Tree.
« on: October 16, 2008, 18:45:48 »
Does anyone have any advice on pruning a fig tree please?
Mine has been very leggy this year with not too many figs on. I'm sure it can do better. ;D

I do not know the correct answer, but this time last year I had to hack a very overgrown one back to the main branches.

Loads new bits grew out of every leaf joint. No fruit this year. But a healthy looking shrub.

The RHS has a good piece on renovation pruning:

Thank you both. This is it's 3rd year, and if I don't do something before next Summer I can see it's going to be a disaster. I just didn't want to hack away and kill it orf, and as it's a foreigner I wasn't sure what it would and wouldn't tolerate. I certainly didn't know it should be pruned twice a year!
