eek... I'd be after someone to get rid of that for me... I don't "do" spiders... unless they are "money spiders" or strangely daddy long legs (which I know are not spiders!)

It's a Tegenaria, I'm not sure of the species. That's the house spider, it'll make a web in a corner somewhere, and massacre the flies all summer.

We won't oust it, they are welcome round here! The O.H.said " at least it's big enough to keep an eye on"  ;D ;D ;D we have a woodburner, therefore we have plenty of air vents and the couple of house spiders who live in the front room keep the  insect / beetle /earwig fly  population down!

Friends indeed. Far better than the disease carrying bugs they eat.

When we lived in Hampshire, we had house spiders you couldn't get a pint

glass over thier legs !     Son once told me  that one ran over his pillow one night,

and he could hear it's feet hitting the ' deck ' !  ooh   err ,

We had one who used to live in the brick crevices of the open fire surround. She used to come out at night and watch the tele.

We called her Deirdre.

We are currently baby sitting the next generation in our dining room.  Nearly dusted them away but they are safe and we are waiting for them to emerge.  Spiders give my eldest the heeby jeebies which is bad luck because they are our preferred method of pest control - along with wasps.

That's the largest Tegenaria species, and I don't think you're exaggerating! They're murder on bluebottles.

  Love it ---   Deirdre        ;D

Same location, one would come out during the evening from a central heating grill in the floor,

We had a plain dark brown carpet so if it went wandering we lost sight of it,  was OK when it scouted
the skirting board as it was white and it showed up.     When we lost it ....   we'd all drag our legs onto chairs and settees   and wait for someone to shout ' there it is ' ----   then  we'd just watched tele.

Happened a lot but never thought of evicting it ! ::)

Thanks Robert, won't tell Son of your ID - he'd probably put out a hit list !!!    ;D

My Pa used to say:
If you want to live and thrive,
Let a spider run alive.
Then came Charlottes Web. :'(
I happily live along side spiders, BW thinks I'm a slattern 'cos I wont evict them ::)
Smile, it confuses people.

lay a switched on torch on the floor, so that it shines a circle of light on a wall, any creatures which cross the beam show a HUGE shadow on the wall!! it's peach in the harvest season when loads of 'em come indoors!!! ;D ;D ;D

We get big spiders too they run around the floor. First one we saw we thought it was a mouse running across the floor!

My grandfather was a keen gardener and didn't believe in killing spiders as he saw it as bad luck.  My Mum has another theory in that if you kill one another two of his mates turn up!  I don't normally kill them on purpose.
