I emailed that seller last summer about their netting.  I wanted to know the mesh size and they replied they couldn't tell me because it wasn't on the package and they couldn't open one because they wouldn't be able to pack it up again.  I bought what I needed elsewhere.

Looks like the stuff that is fatal to any bird that gets caught in it to me.  I don't use the flimsy stuff any more due to a couple of bird catches (one of which I got to too late and resulted in a dead female blackbird around nesting time)

Oh no! I didn't know about that! I should have asked here before I ordered - I almost did!  :-[

We have very few small birds here, either because there aren't many trees and bushes nearby, or because there are red kites almost always in the vicinity, or maybe just because there just aren't. Which reduces the risk of me snaring any, but on the other hand, makes it all the sadder if I do.

I wonder if it will help if I thread tinsel through it or something, to make it visible? Will make my garden look a bit mad but never mind! It's really to keep pigeons off my greens, as pigeons are always hanging around, and once they figure out I'm growing brassicas, could make a real nuisance of themselves. Secondly, as a climbing support for beans.

Oh, and we do have a Poundland in Reading, too, could have gone there had I known... (No Poundstretcher, I kind of miss them for garden stuff.)

Redclanger, what kind of mesh *do* you use now? I've been googling to try and find some recommendations for bird safety, but haven't come up with anything helpful. Do you think they get stuck in it because they don't see it's there - in which case my notion of jazzing it up could help... or are they actually trying to perch on it, or get through it, when they get stuck?

I don't believe the netting is the problem.  It's how it's used.  I use the fine netting and I've never had a bird trapped in it.  I've released birds from netting on other plots on my site and it's always because the net hasn't been properly secured all round and gaps have been left allowing a bird to get in and then they panic and can't find their way out.  I make sure the nets are always taut and secured firmly to the ground with heavy weights all round.

I use debris netting mostly but where I want insects to get through for pollination purposes I use stiff black net with holes about 1cm square.

I do agree with Ceres that fastening down is probably the problem but I would rather be safe than sorry.  I don't always have time to fix down all my netting - especially when the purpose is to keep pigeons and not butterflies off during winter and early spring.

I use green debris netting in rolls 50m long 2m deep and cost about £30 on e-bay delivered.

We use wilkies black pond and crop saver. We only use it on top of canes and wire mesh and then it is held down by wooden clothes pegs

We have 50 ex bat hens, free to wander anywhere they like, and need to put some sort of netting over my new raised beds to stop them scratching up all my plants.   ::) 

Any ideas on how to fix this netting to the beds please?
