Take 'em if you dare!
« on: April 13, 2009, 22:36:05 »
Someone had a few bean poles stolen from the plot recently and we were advised to mark ours so that's what I did  ;D

Just hope no one sets up a wigwam on my plot!

Glad I read this thread. Our 40x 8ft canes are jammed into our 6x4 shed. They do make it awkward to reach the shelves so we were going to put them behind the shed today. This would have allowwed us to put our porta potti in place ::). this luxury will have to wait until the supports are put into the ground. Why do the few spoil things for the majority? All most of us want is a peaceful life. :(

The thing to do is when you get hold of any scum that helps themselves to your property is, wear some leather gloves and give them a backhander then pick up one of your hazel sticks and whack them across the legs it must be ok I saw a copper do it on the telly, ;)

Just because the plod can get away with it, it doesn't mean they wouldn't love to arrest you for the same thing!

It should be, but despite numerous assaults on, and killings of, civilians, how many of them have ever been convicted for violence?

At least we don't live in Thailand, so unless you want to catch a Tube train, they'll not normally shoot you...  :-X

Sorry to bring this thread back to DowntoEarths picture - been enjoying the read tho!
Where do people get those lovely sturdy bean poles from (AND NO JOKES!!!), I'm serious, I've got lots of canes, but would much prefer to have something that was sturdier and not so environmentally c**p!

Hi 1066 - I got mine from a woodsman who sells logs, kindling, builds rustic arches and the like.  All very legitimate I might add, he works in the local castle grounds. I think if you google "coppicing" you might find a local woodsman.  Mine are chestnut and he reckons they should last about 3/4 years, my hazel ones went brittle after about 2 years but I did leave them standing for all that time.

Thanks for the info DowntoEarth, hadn't thought that literally! I know of some great Chestnut coppicing woods in Battle, where we go for a walk and get the chestnuts, so I'll have a look round.
Then I'll need to start thinking of paint colours and designs ;D

Hazel ones were about £6 for a bundle of 10 and chestnut about £9 for the same quantity, but as he hadn't got any hazel in he let me have the chestnut for £6. I think if you shop around you can possibly get them cheaper but I like to support the local people where possible.
