Planting out parsnips
« on: May 04, 2009, 12:38:05 »
Having had so little success with parsnips the last couple of years, I have sown in pots and loo rolls this year. Germination has been good but they are only just producing second leaves. How big should i let them grow before i plant them out?

As long as they're protected against slugs then I'd get them out ASAP into final positions, hopefully you';ll be in well before the croot fly (get some onions in either side.....

I'm planning on sowing mine in a week or two (it's mroe to do with needing to get other stuff in before then)

Glad you asked this Caroline, I was wondering the same thing! Mine are in an unheated greenhouse so assume that I need to harden them off first before planting out? :-\
Wont be any root disturbance cos will plant out the whole loo roll.

Caroline get them in now!!!!  I plant direct with three seeds per station and today i transplanted a couple to the 'slug gaps'  although they only just have second leaves the roots go down a good three inches

Be really careful when planting so that all the side roots are not disturbed.  I used a dibber to make the hole then hold the pant at the right hight in the hole, dib next to it to push the earth against the root - it's worked in the past ;D

Unfortunately this is not so, If you have sown the seeds in loo rolls, by the time you have some true leaves the tap root will be out of the bottom of the roll :( & will be disturbed as soon as you move the roll. You need to plant the loo roll as SOON AS the seed leaves appear, or like mine last year, you will get forked parsnips.

I'll be happy to get parsnips, forked or not! Unfortunately I've just got back from the plot and am aching too much to go back today- will just have to hope it's not throwing it down tomorrow evening!
