Do you grow things you hate?
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:32:50 »
I really don't like the taste of chillies, even mild ones.

But I have the seeds of TWENTY-SIX different varieties waiting to be sown because the rest of my family love them.  ::)

Do any of you grow things you hate?

Personally no, as my tastes are fairly catholic... but if I grow something new (like Paracress) and don't like it I don't grow it again...  :-\

Yes, I grow spinach and kale just for my daughter’s guinea pigs, I personally wouldn’t touch the stuff.

I have grown leeks this year for my daughter and husband.  I hate them so much I even hate the smell of them in the car driving back home once I have picked them.  I did not know my husband liked leeks he has been subjected to 36 leek free years.

I have also planted asparagus - hate that too.  Brother in law particularly likes it.

Where to start...

1  Butternut squash
2  Any other squash

Every woman I know thinks they are fantastic, so I end up with so many wasting the space..

3  Courgettes

On dialysis they are just about all that's permitted('cept for double boiled potatoes), and 12 years later I still hate the d**n things.. but as above...
What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

I don't like rhubarb, but grow it for my OH.
Grew some mooli, did not like them, but will grow a few again this year, and try a bit better with the cooking.

Cucumbers!!

If I eat cucumber as part of a meal I can't taste anything else on the plate!

In fact if my wife makes me a sandwich she won't use the same knife that cut the cucumber to cut the filling, or indeed the sandwich itself!

If she did! my taste buds are so keen I can tell if she has did use the same knife!

Strange how my kids and grandkids can't get enough of them hence me growing them!

Broad beans for my mum and dad - it's the only veg I really don't like, but I'm glad to have an excuse to grow them because I think they look lovely, and I love podding them!

The short answer is no...but if you asked my husband he would answer just about everything as he hated veggies bless him but he enjoys the gardening and he enjoys sharing.

I have grown things that I later found that I was not all that keen on. Shard was one thing, salsify another, Khol rabi I was sort of iffy about .

I hate cucumber and was told if I grew my own that I would find it tasted totally different. I grew it and it tasted just as horrible. OH liked it though.

There are several herbs which taste awful on their own but a small bit mixed with something else enhances the flavour of a dish and one time I hated chillis but I tried and love sweet chilli sauce, gradually my taste for chillis has been aquired.

There is only one thing I have never ever been able to eat and that is a banana but I would be ever so pleased if we had the sort of climate we could grow them in, especially at this very moment.
