It looks like a roller.  Does it have that axel stub on the other end too?

OH has had a look, thinks it looks like a sewage sump/ cess pit, although hard to tell because of scale.... ;D...he's seen similar things dug up on building sites. Perhaps not jump on it then?! :o

Ive just called the old guy that lived here. He's coming to make sure its what he thinks it is but yes unwashed it appears that your right it is indeed a roller minus the handles.

Weve been wracking our brains all night to think what it might be, first thought was cess pit but knew we didnt have one, second was bomb, just wasnt sure.

We were going to have a word with the fire station over the road  and ask them their opinion.

Think your right.....looks like a roller to me.  We had a similar thing happen a few years ago when we where digging out a soakaway for the septic tank.  The digger guy dug up what looked like something with a fin on it  :o Called the police, they came and had a look, said yup its a bomb.  We had to evacuate the house (with the dogs, the cat we couldn't catch so she had to take her chances) while they called the bomb squad (from Liverpool) and closed off the main road going past our house.  5 hours later was allowed back to the house.  Turned out that it was a training dart used to train bombers and not a real bomb after all  :-[  Still had it gone off it would have saved us digging a new soakaway....in fact we probably would have had a swimming pool and no house.   We can laugh about it now  ;)
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.
