these are some of the mushrooms we've grown in the poly border
we bought a kit in february, half price, got fed up with the lack of success and threw the compost in the bed
left it alone and have had 2 lots come up..now I know how to grow them ;D

I've seen those kits in a few places -
what do you think that advantage is of growing your own? The kits tend to cost about £4 or £5, but presumably you don't get that many mushrooms out of them?
Do they taste different to the shop-bought?
Or is it just a bit of fun?

they're a lot fresher and more mushroom-y
we've never been any good at growing them in kits..there's all sorts now, you can grow them on straw bales, in pieces of log, you can buy the spawn ..I suppose it's all good fun, really :)

I brought a packet with two lots of spawn in there. Had no success growing in a poly box so threw the next lot on the manure pile and didn't get anything either even though wild mushrooms were coming up. Glad you got something though. Feel as if I want to try again maybe if I see one half price i'll give it a swirl.

If anyone ever sees untreated `spent` mushroom compost for sale then buy it. A place up near where I live used to sell it at 75p a bag-I reckon I got at least a fiver`s worth of mushrooms from one bag. They may not have been perfect shapes, nor quite the flavour of a true field mushroom but I was not complaining
