Ornamental lake yields its catch of the day - 02/06/2005

Fishery experts had a whale of a time during a health check on United Utilities’ ornamental fish lake.  They had planned to stun its inhabitants with an electric current so they could be caught and counted. But the scale of the fish population at Lingley Mere, Gt Sankey, left the experts and employees feeling stunned themselves. An initial trawl of the lake neted shoals of carp, including a 36lbs giant, and so many other species the ’electro fishing’ plan was abandoned.  Robin Uttley, of United Utilities Property Solutions said: "Employees ensure that pond life is well fed but we were astonished when it proved to an anglers’ paradise.  There was even a 12lbs sturgeon.
"The survey was part of our environmental duty to check the size, type and health of the fish population. "But the haul was so huge there were too many to count.  Some may have to be relocated to other waters."
