Dried horseradish

Does anyone know where I can buy 'Dried Horseradish'?

I have tried the local supermarkets, Waitrose, Asda, Safeways. Gosport is not very well serviced with shops with things just a little bit out of the ordinary.

Hi Tim,

I have loads of beetroot and cabbage and would like to make a relish. (already made my usual chutney and beeroot cakes). The recipe I have calls for either fresh grated or dried horseradish.

I don't grow horseradish because it is a very invasive plant. My neighbour on the allotment did have some but we have both over the years been spraying it with glysophate to try and get rid of it.

I have never cooked with horseradish so if anyone can suggest a substitute I would be grateful.

If not - any other ideas to use up the beet and cabbage. My second sowing of beet has caught up with the first and the third is golf ball size. I shall be selling some on our Association stall at Michaelmas in September but still have loads to use.

Check the local grass verges - horseradish grows wild around here. You can get it for free!

Many verges are sprayed?

Sorry to be so dilatory - specialist stores (inc Harrods, I think) sell grated in jars. Or why don't I mail you a root for DIY??

To show what a rank amateur I am I bought  5 thongy things from T&M and planted them.

Bloke from a couple of plots away asked why I'd done this when horseradish is so prevalent a weed on our site.

There hundreds of clumps.

Dumbo thought they were docks because they were in and around nettles....Doh.

Thanks everyone - I have discovered the specialist Chinese deli's stock it in dried flakes. I think that will be much easier than digging it up on the road side. 

Thanks for the offer Tim but even I am adverse to grating the stuff by hand. I'm all for DIY but that is taking things too far.

PS Oh happy days - I remember browsing the food hall in Harrods The cheese counter was my favourite. -I worked in Belgravia for 15 years.

I would even have grated it for you - no hassle!

Especially with microplane graters.
