an allotment board game?

I was thinking of board games yesterday - I think there was a simple game at the HDRA - dice game going from one end to another. I was thinking of designing an allotment board game that you go round and round (like monopoly) with say "compost cards" and "veggie cards" in place of chance & community chest. Farming (well, growing fruit, veg, trees, herbs, flowers) is a new skill in the massive multiplayer online game - Runescape - you make compost (and there is a supercompost which can be made from pineapples as well as other runescape ingredients) and there is companion planting to help prevent disease.  Anyone got any ideas, or want to help me with this (whether anything will come of it is another question)?

What a great idea MV.  When I saw the topic I was already putting it on my Christmas List.  I was disappointed when I saw it hadn't been invented yet. We are a Board game family and often get together for a Games Nights.  I think it is an idea worth exploring.  :) busy_lizzie

Had a couple of thoughts on the community chest/chance type cards - you forgot to put the lid back on the compost bin so now the compost is wet from the rain.... what sort of penalty should there be for this?

There is a hole in your netting, the carrot root fly/cabbage whites/... get in and start to destroy the crop. Roll 1,2,3 and the crop can be saved, 4,5,6 then the crop is totally decimated...

Blight?

White rot?

How about :- Go back 2 spaces while you add some cardboard/newspaper to help dry out your compost.

Or even make it 3 or 4 spaces?

Still haven't got a board yet! What about the same dimensions for Monopoly? Will have a go with something now!

Ooo, ideas are flooding in! Have a season compass thing. Thinking about individual allotment cards for each player, but unsure of dimensions for that...

Well, if I can get ideas and stuff down on board and paper, will need some people to test it!!!

MV My OH and I talked about it on the way back from the lottie this afternoon.  Ideas were flying thick and fast. Here are a few: The board would be rectangular and have six lottie plots on and you would go around the board, picking up seeds packets which you could cash in for produce. Instead of "Go to Jail" you would go to the the "compost heap", you would have to  throw  a double to get out.

Community Chest would be replaced by "Risk" cards,  eg, Vandals burn your shed, pigeons eat your cabbages, plot flooded, but also things like: you win first prize at the veggie show, you have a bumper crop of strawberries, or find lots of pallets in a skip, you could then collect ten packets of seeds.

You can gamble on how soon you sow your seeds in the season, and you could have a weather dice which would dictate whether you have an early Spring or freak Snow in July. In order for you to grow some crops you would have to build a greenhouse.  You could collect a greenhouse piece every time you pass the Allotment Trading Shop.  Finally every player only has twelve goes around the board, one for each month, starting in October. The climax is of course the Harvest Festival which each player display the crops they have collected on their plots.  Each set of veg would have a value which you would tot up at the end.  Instead of a little shoe or a car, like in monopoly you would have little character gardeners, male and female. You would win the "Allotment of the Year Cup" We have loads more ideas.  You have got us both quite excited about it - we live dull lives, as you can tell.  ;D  ;D busy_lizzie
