Thyme secret

I've asked a number of people for advice and my thyme still dies. I've tried gritty, sandy, container, garden, soil, multiperpose, wet, dry......everything.

It's the herb I use most of, so I'm desperate now. :'(

Same here Sketty - I could never get thyme to survive, no matter what I tried. In the end I took the dead roots of yet another one out of its pot and chucked it into a forgotten corner. The following year and every year since, I've had healthy thyme self-seeding all over the place!
Not very scientific I know, but it worked for me!

Suppose I've got enough dead ones to try it with. :)
I would like to find a solution though before I have to take out a mortgage on more plants. :D

It likes it dry and hot, and appears to cope fine with ants' nests underneath it. Bearing that in mind, I think you're on the right track with very well-drained soil, and raised - it does much better on top of a ridge than in a dip.

So what compost/mix?
What aspect?
Watering?
Feeding?
Wintering?
How many thousand plants do I need a year to get a sprig or two? ::)

treat it mean to keep it keen! I think is the best thing for thyme - dry, poor soil. I keep on telling the OH off for watering the herbs! we have two large pots, one either side of the back door. Very handy for cooking. Got mint, sage, thyme, coriander, oregano and basil in them.

I'm very good a killing Thyme! ;)

My first one lasted a couple of years (despite being in heavy undug clay with no grit or compost or anything!) It finally gave up this winter. Bought two more to replace it and then promptly overwatered them. I've given up (for now) - I never use it in cooking, just like having herbs around the garden to smell!

I thought it was just me that kept killing it.

It's so reassuring to know that everyone else does it too.

I thought it liked to be in open sun with nothing shading it.  Even objects if it shades itself so give it a haircut.

I have had my thyme for 3 years or so, its growing that well its seeding all over the herb patch, its parsley I cant keep growing
