Some lovely fungus.  Well hope it's lovely - it certainly looks it.  Our resident fungus hexpert will doubtless answer your question for you.  I know you fret over your old trees if you're anything like me - mine are all oldies but goodies so we have to do what we can to look after them.  I hope it turns out to be quite benign  :)

Pycnoporus cinnabarinus or Trametes cinnabarina (I'm not sure which is correct), I think. It's usually found on rowan or birch, sometimes on beech. It causes white rot, but it's described as 'one of the less destructive polypores'. So your tree's rotten, but hopefully not too rotten.

I would love a tree like that. With or without the mushrooms.

Quite a nice hound, too!

Tim  I only just noticed the dog when you pointed it out.  think I must be going senile.  Yes, lovely doggie

Sorry to hear your tree is poorly so even more TLC required  :)

Thanks for the info Robert_B, it looks a rather colourful fungi, but better not cook it up for hubby's dinner then  ;) ;D
and l will tell Zak you all noticed him guarding the tree.

Should l take it off and burn it ? or just leave it ?

By the way it's an Acacia tree.

Taking the fruiting bodies off won't make any difference; it's the mycelia deep in the trunk which do the damage. I'd be more concerned about how far rot might have gone into the tree.

I've just lost an old tree  :'(    A laburnum - great big one too.  There was still some good wood in it but not much.  The good stuff went to a chap who makes stuff with wood (hope I get something useful back) and I took some to the lotty to make a wildlife area.  A big lump which looks like a pouffe has stayed at home to sit on in the garden.  There is a stump left and there are leafy bits coming back

We have several protected tree's in the garden, and a chappy was here only about 3 weeks ago checking on them, the fungi wasn't on the tree then, but he did comment on how nice the old tree was looking, but no comment on it looking sick  ::)
