I had some wonderful news yesterday that made me feel really chuffed for my daughter.

She is 15 and dearly wants to go into veterinary care. She is certainly intelligent enough (not inherited from me ! ! ! ), her school grades are impressive, and already has her GCSE French. I managed to get her a work experience placement at a Vet's practice next to the college where I work, she was thrilled, enjoyed every minute, even coped with the heart wrenching stuff like putting animals down. All her mates were envious, because they had boring jobs !

Anyhow, the news is that Coventry has a City Farm (a charity), and they have indicated that once she is 16 (in two weeks) then they will accept her as a volunteer ! So now she is looking at how to fit that into her busy schedule at weekends ... stables, dance classes, skating ...

Does it show that I am a proud Dad?

That's great news for you and your daughter. Your daughter's experience at the City Farm should go a long way to helping her be a better Vet. I believe that anyone wanting to be a Vet should get this sort of experience under their belts. You'd be surprised how many Vets don't know enough about the animals that they are treating (this is from personal experience no offence meant to Vets in general).

You must be really proud of your daughter, don't worry she'll find a way to fit it all in  ;D

That is fantastic news Derek - good for her!

I'm most jealous - always wanted to work with animals. Spent my happiest moments working at my riding school from 13-18 years old. I learnt so much - I'm sure she will do too.

Just hope she doesn't start bringing them all home with her!
gone to pot :D

Wow, hurrah for the little fox cub  ;D
Now you want petrol/diesel prices to go down if you are going to do more chauffering about. My DH's caving friend from way back is a professor of veterinary anatomy at a Dublin uni.

Just then, was reminiscing about DeadRingers (when it was on the radio) and their take on Rolf Harris & Animal Hospital...

Anyway, best of luck to her.

Derek
You are justified in being a proud Dad.
This certainly puts paid to the "experts" who say that us parents are rasining a generation of turkey twizzler fed fatties who want to sit in front of a tv all day and go out all night dressed in hoodies scaring old ladies!

Just to add that my eldest now swears he is the next Freddie Flintoff (as well as the next Steven Gerrard) and who am I to argue.

Full credit to you, and the very best of luck to the fox cub.

Working at a City Farm is a great thing for your daughter to do Derek.  It will give her bags of experience and confidence with a variety of animals and not just domestic ones.  I was a volunteer at a Newcastle City Farm many years ago and it was great.  We kept cows, goats, pigs, donkeys, ferrets and a variety of small animals like guinea pigs and rabbits etc., as well as ducks, hens, and geese etc.  I am sure she will love it and be a good grounding for her work as a Vet.  It is wonderful to have a dream and be taking the steps to make it come true.  No wonder you are proud of her and she is lucky to have such a nice Dad to encourage her.  :) busy_lizzie
