taming the waste land

Well 18 months in and I've a sense of pride.

what was a mess of nettles and raspberry gone wild is now a productive semi tidy plot.
Hard work has been applied and so far we have cropped:
Potatoes third lot ready to lift soon.
Fennel not many but very tasty
Beetroots, last year (only ting I wanted to grow) we have enough for Xmas Polish style, this year looks (no cont chickens) looks better much better.
A spring and summer of salad greens without a trip to tesco was well worth the effort alone. (next door either side have both have the benefit of just too much good stuff).
Onions are now drying on strings and it seems we found the touch at last after last seasons poor showings.
Rhubarb, well crumble is cooking yet again as I type. Plenty to go around and more in the freezer for later much later..
The new stuff are the beans we're now at he stage where we can't eat any more and the freezer is coming into play again.

The down size of the venture:

Hard work - well I needed it
Pests etc. - well they've got t eat too.

Up side
ex bomb site is now a veg plot   
organic is hard work but more than worth it, flavour and knowing its clean.
I get to listen to radio 3 on sunday in peace. Handle and digging go somehow...


Thanks to all for their info and ideas and more than anyting their encouragement in starting the journey, we're  better for it and will be here for some time.

sounds like you have achieved a lot on your plot. i had the benefit of a clean, looked after plot when i took mine in february. but it has been amazing to see what grows in a season, and very very satisfying. as with yourself, no trips to the shops for salad thigs and most veg. this feels great. OH was so proud at times that father was called (who used to be a dairy and market garden farmer) and told of what homegrown delicacies we had that night :) bless him
