Hi All

OK, so I've grown my pumpkin, decided what design I want, but what I want to know is...

...how do you scrape some of the flesh out before you carve, so the craving is a bit easier + you don't waste all that lovely flesh?

Any ideas?

I use a soup spoon, I find the shape is ideal, and the flesh comes out in neat balls ...

Scrape all the coarse material and seeds away first, saving the seeds if you wish ... then attack the main flesh, just as if you were scooping out melon balls, or icecream ...

When I've tried using a spoon in the past it's been like trying to sculpt granite with a plastic knife.

Maybe I have bigger muscles now - we'll see

Diana I use a plastic ice cream scoop, and only scoop away in the area we are going to carve! (less work on a BIG pumpkin!) 
I use the insides on halloween party night to scare all the kids in our touchy feely game, last year I think it was Dragons innards! ;D

I use a wierd little plastic shovel designed for the job....I picked it up for a few cents last time I visited the rellies in Canada....surely such a thing is available here???? I have always carved pumpkins as Canadian mother insisted on such, a thick plastic shovel is by far the best tool that I've ever used.... If you want to cheat a little, carve a big circle out of the back first, this way you can put in and light candles more easily too, as well as getting 'bits' out of your design. ;)

Yes, there are spoons and spoons ...  ;D

The spoon I like using is quite an old spoon, which is worn at the edges and quite sharp - you would not want to put it in your mouth, but it is pretty good at carving granite ...
