Hey all - I have some lovely turnips on the lottie which appear to be coming up for ready to pick. As this is my first year I dont really know when they will be ready, and then when they are ready, how to store them.

They vary in size from golf ball sized to at least the size of a tennis ball.

I am also worried that all this rain will ruin them so am anxious not to lose my precious crop.

All help would be appreciated.

p.s. these questions kinda go for most of the stuff I have sown - how do you know its ready to pick and (if you have a glut of it), whats the best way to store it??????

Have you done a search in the forum for this as I seem to remember seeing a post relating to this where someone said that they would keep quite well in the ground until needed - not sure about this though as I haven't grown them myself.

Sorry I couldn't be much more help.

If you're worried about them I would get them in.  you can always keep them in a cool, dry place in a hessian sack or a paper one.  Mine are still outdoors as they aren't ready yet and the foliage looks wonderful. Whether they'll stand up to any really bad weather I'm not sure.  Does it say anything on the packet about storage?

agrees with wardy, get 'em in and store in containers of sand or dry peat/ growbag stuff ... cut the tops ( the folliage bit :P ) off first      {:¬)

P.S. seem to remember reading somehere that you can plant/sow the tops in Autumn, anybody know about this ?
