New allotment.

Hi, I am soon to be starting an allotment with a view to market gardening. I have been given a plot of land to use but it yet needs to be ploughed. Does anyone have any tips for the first time allotment? I want to get it up and running before the year gets too far ahead of me.

I live in Caithness in the far north of Scotland so the climate here is slightly cooler than the rest of the country.

if you can i would sergest using a rotavator or something simmaler im using one this weekend im lucky my dad has one hes lending me because there quite expencive to hire down in manchester its 126 for the weekend and 400 pound deposit  all the best with your plot from loulou

Sounds like a lot of work!!Climate quite a bit colder and shorter season too. Have you got any ideas who you are going to well your goods too. I nearly cry when I give mine away it is like giving away one of my family

From the time I have spent hill walking in that part of the world I know you get longer day length in the summer though. I suspect raised beds would be a good idea and maybe something to cover the soil in the winter so that the rain doesn't leech all the goodness out.

Planning on selling to general public and to local grocers etc.

I am also a fellow scot, although a lot further south, I am also a newbie on the lottie scene, however, my advice would be to sow or plant a month later than
stated on the packets, I have found that these references are aimed mainly at the warmer climate down south,hope you have a really successful season.

ps my grandfather originally came from small village of lybster, are you familiar with it?........regards... veggie
