I saved some chillis last year (not home grown unfortunately!) by chopping them fine and freezing them in ice cube trays with a little water, brilliant to add to chilli con carne etc.

Just daren't make ice for drinks in the trays ever again...

Do chillies grow outside ok... even in the freezing north?

Actually, in the "freezing" north of the Netherlands they can grow outside, not with great success but I did get a handfull off a couple of plants. This was before I got the small greenhouse and do they ever do good in that.

I might give them a go then!  Any varieties you can recommend? ::)

Hi Sparky

You could try a variety called `Apache`-it`s a dwarf hybrid that grows well in pots -it`s a good cropper and hot but not hot like a habenero or scotch bonnet.

If you cannot find the seeds then send me a message.

Stephan.

-and talking of rolling the things in your hands - DON'T forget, afterwards,  to keep your hands away from any part that you value!!

I always forget. = Tim

I'd rather suffer from burns than from gloves - same in the garden!! - Tim

I should say so - I'm the NE rather than NW but find hot chillis grow very well.  I should declare that I don't have an allotment, just a veg garden all in pots, you can see some photos at

I'm experimenting with overwintering some of the pepper plants, the jury's out on whether they'll survive or not.

Wendy, I started to overwinter some chilli plants, but got fed up with them in the greenhouse taking up room, plus they started to get greenfly!  Gave up, binned the lot and decided I would just grow fresh every year.  Do let us know if it was worth overwintering then maybe I shall be more determined this year.

Yes, that's why I say the jury's out.  I brought in about a dozen plus a couple of aubergines.  I've already chucked the aubergines and more than half of the peppers - just too depressing.  But I've got several pepper plants that at least look alive, we'll see if they fruit.  I figured it might give me an edge of speed against our very short growing season here.

I've just started off some Christmas bells, which are mind numbingly hot, but very pretty - a tiny bit goes a long way, and they're great with cheese sauce, as are slightly smoky in flavour.

Anyone tried pickling any other variety than jalapeno?

Peas xx
