I bought a small plant a while ago, and have just planted it in a pot on the patio. I would like to put it in a bed to replace a dead bush, but is it winter-hardy, or would I be better taking it into the greenhouse, come Autumn?

Bay is pretty hardy and will live outside fine.

Ideally though lant out of the way of cold easterly winds as thse can scorh the leaves.

Yeah it's pretty hardy stuff.  Mine has been in a pot in my garden for a few years now, I rarely water it or do anything to it infact. Having said that my garden it quite small with high fences around it so it is pretty sheltered.

Yes, plant it ouside! It will be much happier and grow very big if you don't clip it! Mine grows in a fairly shady border. I  keep it trimmed in a cone shape; it's now 8 ft. I have once read  that it's hardier when it's mature, so perhaps it's worth protecting with fleece during the first couple of winters.
