I am new to my plot, having only had access since beginning of April this year, so am trying to get everything together, and the obvious Hose band/water shortage grabbed my attention!

I have ordered (and received) some "waterbutts" from a company via Ebay, and thought I'd let you all know about.

The company is "D& V Fuels" (www. dvfuels.co.uk) - they supply various plastic drums/barrels that have had food industry items in them (i.e. fruit juice concentrate) that has been washed out. The ones I received had had Mango Chutney in them, but were washed out so well, I couldn't even tell!

The drums vary in size also - I went for the 200 litre ones.  They don't have taps fitted, but they can be fitted at additional cost. The lids fit well to help stop evaporation during the (allegedly) hot Summer.

Anyway, I was very impressed by the drums, the delivery and all aspects so I thought I'd share it with "the community".

Thanks for that. Have had a look at the site myself as am in the market for something like this. How much was it and what was the delivery cost, please?

The water butts I wanted with wide lids are £6.50 each (in blue). You get 8 to a pallet, and carriage per pallet is just over £40. So I have ordered 8 and will sell the spare ones for £15 locally ;D

I was phoning round during the end of last week for water butts, and everyone was sucking in their teeth and saying how rare they are. Your post came at just the right time piggy, thank you :-*

I have recently bought second hand barrels from this company:

Ordered over the phone and they arrived next day. The site is pretty horrid but they were very helpful on the phone.

There are other companies doing the shame such as:

http://www.plasticbarrel.moonfruit.com/

http://www.thetankexchange.com/home.htm

Prices seem fairly similar though delivery can be a pain.

One big advantage of these barrels is that they are very sturdy compared to normal water butts, the plastic is far heavier and I believe they will last far longer.

One disadvantage may be that they are not so aesthetic but in most cases they can be screened or hidden to some degree, on the allotment I am not so bothered.

But there are other options that are cheaper yet again. I have recently simply bought a couple of plastic bins from a DIY shed for a fiver each. These will hold the best part of a 100 litres each. One is fed from guttering on a low lean two on the plot and the other will be topped up from the first as and when required.

Recyling old water tanks when plumbing systems are updated is another option and I am keeping my eyes open to see if any make it into skips locally, ask before you remove it though.

A trip around industrial estates may also yield barrels, again ask before you take them and make sure they did not contain any nasty chemicals!
