Hi, I'd like some advice on what's the best mulch to use on my summer raspberries. I'd like to mulch to help keep the weeds down and feed them so they produce lots of fruit. Many Thanks.

A thick layer of well rotted horse manure is ok, or well rotted kitchen compost. I wouldn't put mushroom compost on them, they don't seem to like the lime too much.

I've gone for one year old leaf mould and they look happy enough at the moment.  But this is my first time growing raspberries (in pots) so I can't claim any expertise.

Spent hops with a sprinkle of well rotted manure :)

Last year i used grass cuttings on the advise of an old neighbour and it worked a treat so i will be doing it again this year!

Would it be ok to use wood chippings as a mulch? Have bags of it as I have a huge boundary hedge that I am constantly having to hack back and shred the branches!

I spread manure over em early spring, then mulch with grass cuttings.

What is the hedging plant Niamh ?

Niamh

sorry saddad, off site for ages! My boundary hedge, which separates me from a road, is hawthorn mostly, with some ash. Very vigorous growth wise, so gets trimmed about twice a year. I'm careful of any birds nesting, so leave any cutting back till after nesting season over!

Glad I found this, it makes me feel much better about shoving all my grass cuttings around my raspberries today ;D ;D

Niamh,
Wood chippings, I would suggest, is not ideal.
As they rot they denitriefy the soil.
I think that Grotgag has the right approach!
