Requested South African recipes.

Hi there

I am SAfrican and have quite a few recipes - too many to list.  I have things like Chakalaka (relish), Vetkoek (fried bread balls), sosaties, gingerbeer (fizzy), biscuits like romany creams, curry spaghetti salad, etc.

Let me know if there is anything specific and I will post. 

PS Jeannine - would you be kind enough to post that picked fish recipe - I have tried so many but they never seem to come out right.

What part of SA are you from, Im from good old durbs.  I would love the recipe for the vetkooek I love them, and the romany creams I haven't had them in ages.

                       Pickled fish..Ingelegde vis from the Cape


1 1/2  lb  firm white fish.she has put kabeljou,kingklip,geebek or yellowtail ???
500ml brown vinegar
250 ml water
3 large sliced onions
15 ml curry powder
2 1/2 ml  salt
same amount of pepper
grated rind of 1 lemon
6 bay leaces bruised
6 peppercorns
15 ml fresh fine chopped ginger
15 ml apricot jam
sprinkle of salt and pepper for cooking fish
Cooking oil

Cut the fish into serving portions, season wiith salt and pepper and fry in hot oil. Mix the vinegar and water and boil the onion in it for 10 minutes.
Mix the curry powder, and measured amounts of salt and pepper with a little vineagar tyo make a smooth thin paste,add it to the boiled mixture. Mix the rest of the ingredients except the fish and simmer for 15 minutes.

Layer the fish and the hot curry sauce in a dish with a tightly fitting lid.
Store in the fridge for at least two days before using.

My ma is 'n boer en ek kan nie afrikaans nie meer skryf nie.  Ek dink ons moet weer hoerskool terug gaan :D
