I don't know what forum to put the following article in but as I thought it was just a simple 'basic' question I thought it might go in here.

I guess if it is in the wrong spot someone will put it in the correct one.

*****

I was speaking with someone the other day about why my veg is later than his and it got me thinking about the advice given in this and other forums plus the gardening press.

As I see it; quite often the advice given is from personal experience meaning it was obtained 'locally' which I am sure fine for that area, but it might not suit me for instance.

I have known cases of well intentioned advice being given in forums, gardening press etc that is often not practical. Even my local press sometimes falls into this trap, simply because they have got their information from a text book rather than from experience.

A typical example might be; now is the time to plant out this and that and I look out the window and there is a foot of snow on the ground or 6" of perma frost in the ground, what do you do?

Now over the years I have tended to amend such advice to suit my situation, in fact my website is built with this in mind. (see Preface)

In times past I used to get quite frustrated to see someone writing in and saying my ‘this and that’ is such and such a size or I have planted out ‘this and that’ when in fact I may have not even sown mine.

It doesn’t bother me anymore because I know that my stuff will eventually be harvested be it a little later than other peoples. In fact if I wished I could perhaps reverse the situation by stating I am harvesting this and that when other peoples stuff is done.

But to the new & inexperienced allotmenteers up and down the country this sort of advice might be quite daunting, particularly when they are affected with situations such as I have mentioned above.

Now to the point of my article; would it not be possible to display a person’s approximate location under their user name?

I know we have to respect people’s privacy and we don't want too much personal information floating around but if people are requiring the service offered here I don't think it is too much to ask for a mandatory location.

I know we can currently look at the profile of the advisor or questioner if indeed the information is there. but I guess most of us are too engrossed in the situation at hand or are too busy to look up such information.

Hope I am not speaking out of turn here but I just thought I would mention it to see what you all think.

Been discussed before and most people thought it was a good idea, but didn't bother doing anything about it. I agree with you and as you can see my location is below my avatar. So if you think its a good idea then why aren't you displaying your location? ;D

Robert_Brenchley

It's a good idea on general principles; anything climate-dependent is going to be very local.
