Hi all! :D

Hope you can help me? Another silly question I know but here goes.........

Leeks - I'm growing some leek plants in modules and was told to plant them out when they get pencil thickness  :P in size

But they are not that thick yet - should I keep growing them or plant them out now?  ???

OliveOil

Keep growing i'd say!

saddad

I'd put them out, they may not grow any bigger if they have exhausted the compost, and they will grow away quite quickly in the ground now, if you have had the rain we had last week!
;D

I'm in the same boat, have about 30 leeks in modules which stopped growing and still haven't pulled up all my new potatoes, so don't have the space to plant them out yet. I followed Tim's advice from some time back and gave the leeks a light feed and they've started thickening up right away in their modules.  :)

I'll progably get them out in a couple of weeks.

just remember, when u do transplant them, remember to trim the tops and bottoms, and when u put them in the hole, dont backfill with soil, fill the hole with water  :)

Nobbyman

oooh!!!

I was always told not to trim the tops or the roots!!

Is this correct?

I trim.

kitty

its generally accepted nowadays that it ISN'T necessary to trim either the top or the bottoms of leeks-so its up to you-personally i just dib a hole ,pop leek in,fill with water and leave them..if they've taken the trouble to grow leaves and roots i think they should keep them!
best of luck!

I didn't touch tops or roots and had a bumper crop last year and it was my first attempt ;D

I didn't wait until they got to pencil size either and I am following the same trend this year ;D

deboydoyd

No trimming here, and they were quite a bit smaller than pencil size, then again it is our first year and we are making it up as we go along!

redimp

Last year I trimmed some roots and not others and it did not seem to make a jot of difference with regards to size. The trimmed ones were easier to get down the holes though.

I have hundreds to get in.

I have thousands ;D

Mrs Ava

I don't trim.  ;D

Planted another 50 today - now have 150 in.  The thickest are pencils, the thinnest are blades of grass!

I would get them in as they will romp away in this lovely warm weather!  ;D

dicky

I'd say plant them out no trimming.

I grew mine in bog roll tubes and they weren't thickening up, planted them when about 1/2 a pencil width and they are doing rather nicely now.

I never trim leeks. Mine are currently planted out temporily until I lift the onions and the rest of the garlic, and have space for them. Yes, I know I'm following one allium with another, but there's nowhere else to put them, and I don't have white rot.

I use the bog roll tubes for blanching.

Well, I knew there was something I didn't do right, I put the last of my leeks in today and didn't top and tail them, nor did I drop them in and fill with water.... I filled in with earth then watered... in fact come to think of it, I didn't water them in... oh oh... hope it rains tonight... we haven't had hardly any rain yet... Manchester is the driest I remember it for ages.

And it better not rain tomorrow cause I am out on the bike ....
