food growers calendar

just like the wonderful chinese calendar I think we food growers ought to have a "Year Of The ......." (name your produce)

for me this year would have to be The Year Of The Cucumber or maybe The Year Of The Strawberry - but then there's the calabrese, the leeks, the cherries, the peas, the plums, the beetroot, oh my

what would you designate at this year's best produce for the 12 year calendar  :)

For me, the year I discovered roasted butternut squash - yum! now have more than 10 fruit growing in my friend's garden and 4 (so far) in mine. I think I have caught the squash bug - if that makes sense ;).

Year of the tomato, 13 varieties (I have eaten fruit from 6 of them so far) they are doing better than I could have dreamed.  Yum Yum

Year of the Rock.

The past week of evenings has been spent digging out one wheelbarrowful of rocks (upto rugby ball size, down to 2" sq; still loads of smaller stones left behind) lurking one spit below the surface of the earth. Couldn't even sink the fork in all the way.

2M x 1M x 2 spits deep (2Msq) = 1 full barrow load. Good job I'm strong!
This week = 6 of the above. The rest of the plot to go (148Msq) excluding paths. You know, it gets a bit boring but I know it's for the long-haul and it's so enjoyable being able to unwind at the end of a working day. It's also a great feeling when another strips been conquered! ;D

Year of the Pomegranate, grown these dwarf P from seed taken 15 years, only started flowering last year, been worth the wait.. even set a couple of fruit, although they won't ripen!
