I've read that spring sown have better keeping qualities than autumn.

GQT had a featurette on overwintering onions last week. They guru said he grew only autumn sown and not spring sown, and that he had no trouble keeping them, he said modern varieties had developed thick skins!

Sodbuster

Think it will be some varieties that store OK rather than all  - usually reckon to use my Autumn onions by Christmas as they can start to sprout.
