HI all, I need help here!! My Romenesco cauliflower which were doing soooo well, have copped it to CWB and some horrid yucky brown rot stuff burrowing into the leaf nodes SO.....As an organic gardener I've decided that cauli's  & broccoli aren't Worth planting out in the open!
Went to the hardware shop to buy something to build a cage with and the only thing in the shop was mosquito mesh which was 2.50 Euros a meter (about £1.75) I was going to buy 30 meters but it would work out too expensive and not worth it for a bed of caulis! To cut a long story short what do you use for your cages? I could get some sent over from blighty.

Thanks in advance

HI Jen, thanks for the swift reply, Euromesh is still expensive though but it says it lasts 7 years. Anymore ideas??

Net curtains from charity shops? I've used these with success. You may be able to get the envromesh cheaper if you shop around, and it does last well. Or there's always ordinary horticultural fleece. These things are best bought in large quantity for cheaper prices, they are always dearer if bought by the metre.

Well i think it all comes down to how cheeky you are.
Since we took over our 2 plots in May 2005 this is what
we have scrounged.
We have an 20ft X 10 ft Greenhouse which needed a lot of glass
so we scoured our local council estates and when ever we saw
anyone having new windows fitted we asked the fitters for the old
frames with glass in  & they are willing to give it to you , saves them
having to dump it.
To answer your question we went around & looked for any scaffolding
around our area & found quite a lot which had that fine green mesh
around it so we asked what happend to the mesh when the scaffold
came down & guess what , they throw it in the skip hence we have more
than enough for our needs.
Then when we picked up the mesh we enquired about any scaffold boards
that did not pass the test to be used again on site & hey presto we had
50 10ft delivered YES they delivered them for us at no cost although we did
give the driver a few bob for a pint so we will be raising our beds with the
boards this weekend so as you see if your cheeky enough you
can scrounge anything

Bill....
