to wash or not to wash?

Hi everyone,

just dug up loads of our carrots and the rest of our spuds (pink fur)

(very proud - never grown carrots before, have left some in, covered in coffee and straw too)

to store should we wash them first or leave them muddy?

we cannot decide what is best.........

Don't know about Carrots, I never have - although it depends upon how muddy. If you do wash them, give them plenty of time to dry thoroughly before storing? But, certainly, don't scrub.

Potatoes - mostly no. But if you fear slug damage (unusual with PFA), then you must wash to check.

Some years on my heavy clay / mud I have to wash the spuds to remove about an equal weight in soil!

I wash all my root veg before bringing them back from the allotment. As Tim says though, I always let them dry thoroughly afterwards.

I had a very theraputic couple of hours on saturday afternoon, individually inspecting about 12 lb of potatoes and rubbing off the bigger clumps of mud before layering them into fruit boxes with newspaper in between and putting them into the shed (some one is going to tell me this is the wrong thing to do now??)

Gave the carrots a good wash as most has some degree of slug damage so had to check we hadn't bought any freeloaders home for us, have put them in the garage fridge as I doubted they would still store and we will get through them quick enough anyway.... carrot and coriander soup for lunch today, my favourite  ;D
