I'm thinking of subscribing to a veg gardening magazine, possibly "Grow your own". Any other recommendations for quality of advice/ value for money. And yes, I know i can get all the info on this brilliant site, but I'd like an alternative medium as well!

Hi

I like gardeners news, not only do they attach the free seeds to the mag but they treat them like mini growing trials.

I like Kitchen Garden, as I am quite new at this they explain things in a way I can understand and they always have offers where you pay the postage and get free seeds.

i subscibed to Kitchen Garden for a year and think it is a great magazine and would recommend it highly. this year i have been subscribed to Grow Your Own and that also is a great mag.  Theres not much between those two really.

I also subscribe to Kitchen Garden magazine, and remain impressed by the continued quality of information and good balance between basic info for newbies, and stuff of interest for more experienced veggy growers.

I did try GYO for a year but haven't renewed my subscription; I got fed up with very large (albeit beautifully photographed) photos, and not much substance. Also there were often mislabelled photos and obvious 'fillers' to make up for the lack of text IMHO. Having said that, I do buy the ad hoc copy because there are so few veggy orientated publications and I can't resist ! ;D
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I used to but have shelves groaning under back issues and saw basically the same features rolling round yet again...
::)
Why aren't you down the Lottie Deb? I've been round twice nobbling people for rents...
;D

I got rid of a load of Gardening mags (general rather than veg) on freecycle recently, so have a free shelf for some new ones now!

OH and sons birthdays right next to each other...I'm still recovering, have had family up from 'dahn sowf' so being sociable! Will be around tomorrow no doubt... ;D

I must admit, I have got quite a few old magazines, I have been meaning to have a clear out, but despite being on holiday this week, spent most of my time down the lottie...... :o

Organic Gardening magazine is the best IMHO

I also like Kitchen Garden.

I occasionally buy Grow Your Own but like Deb P I find that the photos are nice but not much else.  In fact promote the myth that there is no hard work involved in growing your own food.

Hmmmmmmmm

I subscribed to 'Kitchen Garden' for a year. After being here I didn't learn much.
Not knocking, but it's a bl**dy expensive way to learn things. Stay here - right?

I'll second that, GYO is all show & no go
Kitchen Garden is a quality read, I don't buy it to learn anything though, just to read about stuff

I've had loads from freecycle and have enjoyed Gardener's World most, the others seem a little light on content.  I agree with other comments above regarding repetitiveness

I have to admit that we subscribe to Grow Your own AND Kitchen Garden.  But we’re magazine addicts.  ;D

If I had to choose, I’d go for Kitchen Garden as being the more practical of the two.  As others have said, GYO is a bit too glossy and a bit too optimistic in its advice.  But it still has some good hints from time to time, and the advice on fruit growing is pretty good.

manicscousers

I get both but prefer kg, they had tips on growing butternut squash and sweet potatoes, just what we needed  :)

Personally I'm quite fond of Kitchen Garden, although you may want to consider Which? Gardening, which also has some good veg-growing articles (though isn't exclusively about food growing).

Incidentally, I need to weed my gardening magazine collection, so if anyone's near Manchester and wants a pile or two.. :)

MrsKP

I subscribe to GYO and have prodded the OH for a subscription to Kitchen Garden for christmas.

I have learnt more from A4A, but I do enjoy flicking through a mag and don't buy anything else.  I'll probably wait until I get a full two years worth of each and then just re-read !

Truffle

I would cast a vote for GYO, not only because I read it sporadically but also because we have an article in the January issue  ;)
