Outlook express

Having big time problems with this. If I try to open it, it slows the whole of the 'puter down. Just opening a web page can take around 4 min's. Is there a simple way to take it off and re-install?

its not too easy if its the version that came by default with your OS.
If not you could do an add remove to go back to the previous version and update again.

you could also try doing a repair of OE - have a google

Which OS are you using?

Windows XP Pro.
Outlook is showing an E trying to download but that shows 102% which seems odd. I checked the mail on a different 'puter and there isn't a mail trying to come in!
I'm reluctant to just bin the programme as it's part of explorer and I think it would cause a major problem if I did. At the moment, so long as I don't touch Express, the puter works fine, although slower than before.
Done spyware/virus checks and nothing shows.
What would happen if I simply left it alone and downloaded a different client?

I was advised to reregister Outlook Express by typing in msimn/reg in the 'start' 'run' 'open' box.
I did this and got the message 'Cannot find msimn/reg'....! Now I wonder what's happened to that and how I put it back in...any ideas?

the other client would just work.

All email clients have a tick box that say something like - use this as the default mail client - this affects what program launches when you click on an email link etc.

a new email client will also (probably) copy across your email settings (pop and smtp servers etc) and your address book

It would seem to be the lesser of two problems seeing as how Outlook won't behave, but it's strange that it should happen for no apparent reason...and what happened to the reg.file I wonder. Is it possible to download that file and re-instate it?

Fingers crossed, but I think I managed it. I re-introduced 5 Reg DLL files and it seems to have worked......Phew. 'Puter if fairly flying, considering I might have to tie it down.

Are you using Outlook Express or Outlook?

Express, Telboy. And it's playing up again! Checking the mail from elsewhere I see lots waiting to come in but doesn't seem to manage it.
Considering either ditching it and re-loading (not as straight forward as I thought according to MS info sheets) or possibly hiding it and downloading a different prog...the bug is, it's not an express problem really, it could happen with any client. I'd prefere to keep the beast I know, but playing around in the register is not the ideal thing to be doing!

Actually, I just re-typed those 5 files again and express is behaving!

You could check your e-mails on your server, spam could slow things up, I've just downloaded Cloudmark Desktop to junk the spam (best 'Which' buy.
Do you have an issue with your fire wall(s)? If you have independant FW/AntiVirus, it could conflict with SP2, switch the XP one off.

Damned Microsoft!

I use Mozilla Firefox, have removed IE which Outlook is part of but the EI still persists in coming up when you click on certain links.

Also I have problems with the search facility being the default when you left click on a disk drive, it only started doing this after a recent update to Windows XP.

I get so frustrated by Microsoft thinking it knows what I want to do, after all I've been using these damned things for 20 years (when we used to do our own programming).

I feel like going over to Linux, at least it will do what you tell it. I should probably find that my machine then has much more memory space available

If you upgrade to IE7, then it upgrades your Outlook Express to the newest version as well.....without messing up your data....

Damned Microsoft! indeed ~You cant actually remove IE from a windows machine as its a core part of the O/S used for help menus etc etc etc

As a unix/linux & windows user if all you want is a peacefull life, surf the net, email and office apps then windows is (unfortunately) the easiest OS - IMO. If its performance of single app then probably Linux/Unix/Mac?

Well! I've been messing around with Linux, I had got a Linspire Live disk to try it but it wasn't very successful. It ran from the disk OK but didn't want to install. Then I downloaded Zenwalk but during installation it hung, waiting for something to be input, but I couldn't find out what. I then downloaded Ubuntu and installed that to a spare HDD. I am keeping my Windows XP HDD until I am satisfied with Ubuntu ( that it does what I want without too much hassle. It accesses the wireless router (3Com Office Connect) by ethernet cable but not by wireless.
     My photographic work is normally done with Microsoft Digital Image v10, but I shall have to get used to using The Gimp for this job.
     My main uses are Open Office, Photographic, Web-browsing, File Transfer Protocol and Email.

Wi-fi and linux has always been a bit of a problem due to device driver problems (M$ wants stuff to work straight out of the box - Linux doesn't) have a read of

I thought Outlook Express was behaving after I gave it a kick...all seems well on the face of it but I seem to be having a problem sending attachments...anyone had only this attachment problem?


I just tested it again before I put my heavy garden boots on to kick it one; and for no apparent reason it's now sending attachments. I'll leave this post on because it's still a query that me and others would like an answer to for the future.
