That's a cheering sight G. Wish now I'd kept the Cape Gooseberries in and covered - they had very strong root systems and it would have been interesting to see how they'd overwinter. Are you harvesting any of those for winter salads?

A lovely sight, Georgie. I'm green with envy at your beautiful watercress!  :P I love the stuff. Mine is alive, in a big pot outdoors - but it's just a solid mat of tiny leaves and all only about ½" high!  :( How can I get mine to look like yours, please?

SS the capes are in a pot outside - one I didn't get around to emptying!   :o  And you bet I'm harvesting the parsley and watercress for salads.   :)

Hi Grandma.  I grew my watercress from seed this year for the first time.  It's in a big pot which stands in a saucer of water about 2" deep.  The pieces which trail over the side root in the water and I sometimes nip bits off and dib them into the top to keep the growth young and vigourous.  I don't feed, but they are in a good compost.  Happy to send a pinch of seed or a few cuttings if you PM me your details.  I have no idea why yours isn't growing.  Sorry.

Did mine exactly the same - first time this year, big pot, saucer of water - lovely crop all summer. Just nothing like yours for picking at the moment.

'The pieces which trail over the side root in the water ..........' ROFL ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  FAT CHANCE! I've eaten all my 'pieces' long before they're big enough to even look over the side!

Thanks for the offer of seed/cuttings but I have some seed left and will definitely do it again this year. Maybe two or three pots - and just try not to eat it all at once!  ;)

Do you change the water in the saucer every day?  I wanted to grow some watercress so I planted some bought from a farm shop & put the pot in a tray I keep filled with water - the book I read it in said the water had to be changed daily which is a bit unlikely so I am concerned about eating it as I've heard it can cause stomach upsets - or am I confused?

Hello Mary.  I certainly don't change the water every day and I see no need to either.  As I understand it, you only need to be concerned about watercress growing in still water if there is a likelyhood of waste products from sheep  contaminating the water because they contain some sort of virus  - although I cannot remember its name.  There was thread about it here about six months ago I think.

Thanks Georgie, that makes sense, I shall certainly eat it when it picks up a bit more in the spring - not much there to eat at the moment.  I LOVE watercress.  :)
