This may sound a stupid question, as I am new to all this, but have you put your spuds in already.
I have just been around to my dads to use a cool light (but unused room), to put my spuds to chit. I was going to put my earlies in mid march, my other early whatsanames (told you I was new) , start of April and main crops in middle of april.

sorry, ours are in black bin bags in the poly..they're actually spuds we had in the garage from last year, little ones so we're seeing if we can grow any super earlies..normal ones will go in, depending on the weather at beginning of march, in warmed up soil  :) and the chits should go up, if possible  :)

They just come up anyway; that sort of stuff worries gardeners, not plants.

you want a couple of warm days to warm up the soil before you plant followed by a couple of days with some light showers to give the plants a good start.

idealy you want to put all the potatoes in at the same time ( yes even the late main crop ) so that they have longer to grow underground longer.

Ahh right, I live in Liverpool so I would put them in a one to two weeks after our more southerly allotmenteers ? So if we have a couple of nice days mid March, bung the lot in then?
I put them to chit yesterday, there were some shoots already formed in the bag, I rubbed off the longer ones and left the ones around 1/4 inch or so, as I thought the longer ones would get too long before planting.
