You may recall that last year Monty Don and the GW programme visited an allotment in Carshalton, Surrey where rare species of lavender were being cultivated. This publicity helped significantly boost visitor numbers on our open day. It also supports the efforts of almost 100 gardeners.

This allotment is now under threat, not because it is under-utilised but because Sutton Council (London's greenest!)has been awarded Government funding to rebuild a High School. Our allotment is just one of three options.

We need your help. How? please send emails of support/protest to: construction.property@sutton.gov.uk

Every email counts, so please let your friends know and ask them to spread the word.

We had this problem about a year ago. Our council was going to get government money by sorting out a few local schools and to do so they had the idea that they might take some of our allotment. This info was hidden at the end of a report about the schools merger and the council didn't have the decency to let the lottie committee know in advance. To cut a long story short- the schools and parents fought back, the lottie holders kept turning up in force at council meetings and strong letters were written. Our lottie a statutory sitewell cared for and with a waiting list so it would have been  a very long process to actually get the land off us. Anyway the council backed off[!] and we are still there., but not at all complacent. Keep fighting and look at their localdiversity plans/green space etc and quote it back to them. Good luck and keep us all informed
