Went to the Chinese supermarket the other day, saw what I thought was sugar cane and brought some and it isn't.
A little thinner but looks the same but taste (don't know how to describe) yuk!
not sweet not sour like lemon strange taste.

Would anyone know what it is before I put them in the bin.

No it looks like sugar cane on the ouside and same texture inside but the taste isn't. It could be injected with another favour.

Hi I think it is probably  fresh bamboo shoot, it looks similar to sugar cane but it is very bitter. It is available in Asian shops usually in winter months. Before eating there is a fairly lengthy process to preparing it so it is edible. XX Jeannine

Jeannine yes you could be right but it doesn't taste like that when i've had it in a chinese. Don't need to worry too much about it now our compost men took it away this morning as I didn't know what to do with it.

The bamboo shoot you have had in Chinese will be the finished article, I had a Chinese friend who used it and it seemed to take ages to turn it into what we would recognise, shame you chucked it, it would have grown into a nice plant.  I have one of the curly green ones that we get among flowers that has rooted and is growing really well.  XX Jeannine
