The Phantom Lobelia Stripper of Old London Town

Last year I bought a lovely purple lobelia for my tiny pond. It settled in happily for a few weeks, then over the course of a few nights a mystery critter carefully stripped all the red skin off the plant, leaving naked white flesh (kind of like deer stripping bark off trees but on a smaller scale).

I got another one and the same thing happened. I moved it into the middle of the pond and it stopped, so whatever it was doesn't like getting wet.

Any ideas what the culprit might be?  ???
You been goofin' with the bees?

SLUGS!  Graze mine off if I'm not careful.  Now have them in the pond shallows with no surface touching land.  So far, so good!
