Hi all, a few of you know that I had a my case of seeds stolen from my lottie shed a couple of weeks ago as I had mentioned it in PMs to a few people, I was advised to publish it as folks would want to help replace them .I Didn't mention it openly on the site until  a couple of days ago  as I am a relative newbie and didn't want to  anyone to think of the mention as a hint for freebies. I did start to talk about it as many of my seeds are home and I have a few Pms about it, So here is the story with a very funny end!

I had taken my seed case to the lottie a couple of Sundays ago to do swaps with a friend, luckily  my lottie had been emptied for the winter  as it wasn't locked(they break the door here if it is) I left the case there  that night by accident. The next morning I got a call that several of the sheds had been raided and my shed door was open,It was then I remembered my seeds.I was devastated as I have a big collection, some quite rare.I hoped someone had seen the case and taken it in for safety but such was not the case.

After a few days, some people had handed seeds in,it seems that the case which was an expensive padded aluminium job was what they were after,I guess they thought it contained an expensive tool . Anyway under the only light we have there they had looked ,noticed what was in it  and dumped them, they took the case.

Many of my seed packets were found around this area but had been blown off into folks allotments. Fortunately because I am  neat freak all my seeds were individually packaged over the original packets in clear zip lock bags ,so they withstood the rain etc we had for the next few days. Anyway, to cut short, each time I go to the lottie someone else has found a packet it two and I now have most back  and as I keep an up to date seed log anyway  I know what was missing.

Today we are going to have good walk around the two wild gardens at the end for one last look, but we have been very lucky.Others on the site have lost so many things.

The funny story to end....

My Mum was one of those people who took seed heads of things everywhere she went, she kept an  empty pot of Ponds face cream in her bag to put them in. Well I don't nick them but often I will ask if I see a flower with pods on if I may have it, I often forget what they are so I have this bag of seeds which I plant now and again to see what comes up, It is good fun actually. When I originally started a bag it needed a name and was lovingly called  " Mum's Pot Seeds"So far  we have not found this packet, it was quite large and I am wondering if the bad guys fancied this one and are considering growing it's contents.

I would love to be there when they try smoking the result !!!!This is true!!!

Thank you for the offers of seed I have received since I mentioned this a couple of days ago, you are a grand bunch, but it seems I am to recoup most of them.

So glad that you have been able to recover some of your seeds Jeannine.

Lol at the pods seeds not being recovered  ;D

Your story of your Mum actually remined me of my Mum who used to do much the same thing, she would stuff allsorts into her little black handbag after a day out, she always reckoned that if it was growing outside of someones garden onto a public place then it was ok to have a little bit  ::)  ;D

My mother in law was a devil for pinching not just seeds but cuttings not just from parks and gardens but shops as well. she looked such a sweet old lady she got away with it. she always said they grew better then bought ones!!!

I dare not admit about my Mim and her scissors, she had no conscience, and apaprt from this she never did a thing wrong,we  took her to a big gardens in Canada and threatened to stitch her hands in her pockets but it did no good, she even smuggled the cuttings back to England in her cleavage. After she died we found her Ponds pot in her bag and shared the spoils in the family, she was a darling, and yes Mum we are talking  about you down here. Love you ,miss you ,but you know that.XXX Jeannine

Forgot to add. I am so glad my Mum wasn't the only one and it is good to admit it. Do you think there is a name for people who nick cuttings from public places Sniptomaniac perhaps. XX Jeannine

I have some walking onions (didn't know what they were until someone mentioned them, then I saw an article about them in a recent gardening mag) that accidentally 'walked' into my pocket from a loverly garden in Norfolk :-[  ;D
unfortunately they haven't walked very far in my garden yet, the slugs keep getting to them first ::)

Barnowl

That's odd, the slugs have been ignoring mine. Liitle horrors seem to prefer my brassicas.

OK...I'll admit to being a 'Pleasant-plant-plucker' too, although not in quite the same way.
I sometimes cut out suckers from tree bases for my walking sticks....this is good for the mature tree but to offset the guilty feeling I also collect every year seeds such as oak, rowen, beech etc and pot them up. The following year or later I plant them back in the wood. I'm suprised at how many have made it to sapling size, against quite a few odds, over the last 8 years.

My grandad years ago used to go for long walks and always took a plastic bag and a pair of scissors with him, 'just in case'

Sick-making, Jeannine. Wish we had seeds to replace, but we'll be lucky to salvage what we need of ours.

Scissors? We had a titled friend who was an embarrassment to take to another garden!!

Jeannine

Thanks Tim, but it is Ok, I am about 9 or 10 packets short at the last check, I doubt if anymore will turn up now so I am re ordering my missing ones, almost all heirloom tomatoes, but it could have been much worse. Thank goodness crooks have no taste. The good thing is that everyone on the lottie handed in what they found, that is lovely.  XX Jeannine

I cannot take my friend Lee anywhere without him pinching seeds off plants! Your Mum definately not the only one and I have emailed him to tell him he is a sniptomaniac!!
Don't throw paper away. There is no away.
