i got my seed spuds t'other day (late i know) and have set them out to chit a bit (i know its not crucial) but the pink fir apples i am trying for the first time are hard to tell which way is up. i cant really discern a rose as they are so knobbly. i know they take longer to chit than other spuds so am not so worried about that but... when i come to plant them how will i know which way is up?

Sarah,

Once they start to 'chit' and produce their shoots, you plant them so that

the shoots grow upwards.

Hope this helps x

This can be quite a common with many varieties of potato and as with them all, if you look for the point where the potato was attached to the haulm this is the bottom of the potato i.e. the eye/s are at the other end.

Or put another way; sit the potato on this point and the eyes/rose will be the correct way up for chitting

I'm afraid, with me. they just lie as they fall & hard luck!!

I had a couple of long ones and have cut them in half !! will they be OK or have I had my first disaster???

Provided there are eyes on both parts you should be ok, keep the cuts dry (a dose of sulphur powder is the ideal) to ensure they don't rot.

If you intend to plant soon give them a day for the cuts to dry out to be on the safe side
