Tee Gee

Managed to get my Onions & Shallots in this morning!

This year I plan on updating my website with more graphic rather than text explanations so I photographed how I went about it.

So I hope you guys don't mind me practicing on you.

This is .............My Way

http://tinyurl.com/2m5tsu

1) The bed before I started it was dug & manured last Oct-Nov

2) Removed pernicious weeds

3) Tilled the bed with my manual tiller

4) Spread & raked in fertiliser

5) Planted Shallots (before & after)

6)Planted Onion setts( before & after)

Covered with fleece to keep birds and cats off.

Hope you approve...TG

what a good slide show. i like the way you do that. your soil looks quite dry - do you water at all after putting the sets in? i particularly liked the dandylion pic; it looked particularly pernicious. that is a word i am going to  start using a lot more.  thanks Tee Gee your web site is really great , i use it a lot.

Looks very professional, and will be a lot of help for us newbies!

Thank you ;)
Smile at your enemies.

It makes them wonder what you are up to.

If I tell you where my plot is, would you like to come over with your manual tiller, I'll make you coffee or tea   ::)   ;D ;D ;D

I put my shallots in on 19th Feb and they've done tiddly squat...  put some more in a couple of weeks ago and the same.  Can I dig them up, and start again?  Did dig one up yesterday and looks just the same as when I put it in, not squashy or anything, but not even a tiny green leaf poking out.  :(
If I ever get it all right - then that's the time to quit.

Keep the photos rolling,

You might like to use your leftover sets as spring onions. I have just done a quick onion page showing the way.

I lost all my last years onion pictures when I hit the wrong button, please don't tell me you have never done it!

It does look very good - so neat and methodical....

We have couch grass which totally takes over in the blink of an eye. So every time I get a plot ready for planting I have to dig it all out and dump it.

Rohaise

Thanks TeeGee it is really helpful to be able to see what others actualy do. Look forward to seeing more of your clever pictures .Rohaise   :)

weedbusta

thanks tee gee. i'll never tire of looking at pics of plots, especially when there's the odd weed. your slide shows are great.

potterfanpete

Just leave em as they are one day you will see a green bit then--away they go .Mine were same last year I put in early but nothing happened for weeks my onion sets even had left them behind. But as I described they came eventually and I ended up with a really good crop.Don't know why this happened  i presumed it was the variety and or the way they had been treated in store

ninnyscrops

Thanks Rotavator, I'll just leave em be then.....

I start my onion sets and shollots in modules in the GH. Shallots planted about 6-9" apart.
Because there are usually so many onion sets in a bag, wide spacing as recommended can take up so much space. Therefore I plant them nearly touching up to an inch apart in drills. As they grow alternate ones are removed early for use as spring onions and later for cooking. Eventually the rows are thinned sufficiently to allow the ones remaining to mature.
Result all sets used up, no wasted space in the garden and onions of all sizes during the growing season.

Excellent slide show.  I love your tiller - I want one!  ;D

My shallots went in back in February and did nothing for a long time, but I noticed last Friday they all had little tufts of fresh green leaves poking from their heads, so growth is underway.
