My broad bean leaves have been nibbles and look like they have been crimped.  I've looked this up in my "Expert" book and I think it is bean and pea weevil.  Is there anything else it could be?  I'm going to spray tomorrow with an organic insecticide.

my broad bean edges are regularly nibbled by bean weevil and it does look like someone has gone round a hole punched around the edges of the leaves!

I haven't ever sprayed with anything as the nibbling doesn't seem to affect the yeild from the beans, the damage being very superficial.

PAULW

Flea beetle, dust with derris.

I agree with Paul, although if you google Bean weevil you will see pictures that look like mine. I think that they are wrong as the weevil is a serious pest, like vine weevils, whereas flea beetle is an mild problem.

OliveOil

Nick at barnsdale said to leave bean weavil alone - no need to spray as rarely does THAT much damage, just has a nibble of the leaves.

My beans have been nibbled too - i'm not spraying with anythin though  - organic or not.

mine are nibbled too - I'm doing same as Oliveoil

I'd leave them, if the plants are healthy and the beans are unnaffected then no problem. They get the leaves and you get the beans.

Rhubarb Thrasher

yes, broad beans grow fast enough to cope. Peas can be damaged much more badly. Mind you if you Google the weevils, they come over as quite nasty beasts, with the larvae attacking the roots and the actual beans too.

A commercial non-chemical control is to cover boards with grease, pull these along either side of the rows, whilst shaking the plants. Weevils jump onto boards, end of weevils. Never tried it
