Protecting veggies with netting

Hi All,

I need to protect some of my vegtables (onions, garlic, shallotts etc) with some netting.  I have some metal half hoops to put in (3 rows of 4) but was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to secure the net down?

We use bricks paving slabs and lengths of wood.You can also use netting pegs or tent pegs.

Or you get hold of some 12-18" lengths of steel rod or studding, and bend them into a "U" shape and push them through the mesh into the soil.

I use bricks as you can just about see here http://tinyurl.com/y4slxq plus I tie the net to the supports.

I bury one side of my enviromesh netting in the soil (to ensure that surface bugs can't get through) the other side (accessable for weeding) is secured by bricks.

Kaysgardening has some black plastic pegs with jagged spikes that go into the ground, very cheap,about 7 inces long/ I think mine were about £8 a hundred,I think they are for pegging out weedblock. XX Jeannine

I use U shaped metal pins as I find the black plastic ones make rather large holes in the mesh. I think Homebase have them.

Doctored metal coat hangers are very useful - good for securing down the black ground cover material as well.

How about fencing wire, the plastic coated stuff they use to support chainlink fences, cut into suitable lengths? Less likely to rust?

Wilkinsons sells tent pegs quite cheaply, they might be good. We've got enough rubble to sink a battleship on the plot so use that.
