Planting out Acers

Hi all,

Now the allotment is 120 miles away I have to do 'other' gardening, boohoo. We have bought a few acers and hope to plant a couple out. I've read conflicting views on whether they enjoy semi-shade or full sun. Which one is correct - I don't want to scorch £££££'s worth of tree to death.

Also the label recommends planting in acidic soil, I was going to add some rotted manure to get this effect unless anyone knows any different.

Hallo Jon ..Rohaise here !   I am getting into Acers too ,they are so beautiful.      There is one called "Bloodgood ! which I have found doesn,t mind to being alittle bit more out in the sun ...and is a gorgeous red .   
       ALL the others I,ve tried are exactly as described in the link above,very very ,very delicate indeed .  This is not going to put me off.  So I suggest putting into large tubs and moving them around until you find the best spot .  They do like PEAT mixed in to the soil and I think do better for it. This is the only thing I will use peat for...they are shallow rooted and if you plant too deep...its disaster.    Yes water them in and then a nice mulch...Dont spash the leaves. But should you find them allshrivelled and dead looking then still dont give up it should grow back the following year..I know ...I ,ve done it !   ::)     This year I can see that I have planted out an Acer in the wrong place ...too windy...so I will be moving it yet again NEXTspring .         PHEW !   Rohaise    x

Oh! and also .....see Tim,s  maple drop posting ?  well if you want to grow them from seed,then this is how they should look ...nice and fresh and green( or red if from a red acer )   mine I sowed last Autumn are popping up now...they are SO sweet !    ::)  Rohaise  x
